Character List + Explanations for Selection

Hazel – South Italy (Romano)

The main character. He is initially the only rabbit who trusts his brother Fiver (North Italy). He becomes the leader of the rabbits when they reach Watership Down, with a particular talent at bringing out the best in his followers and inspiring their loyalty.

Explanation:

Firstly, to do poor Romano justice for once. Basically, to give him the backbone he is deprived of in the canon series. It's a nice, new take on him, and I just figured it would work well.

Fiver – North Italy

Hazel's younger brother. He is a seer, and his visions of the destruction of the Sandleford warren compel him to leave, along with his brother Hazel and several other rabbits. His visions guide his considerable wisdom, such as when he realizes the true danger of the snared warren, which wins him the respect of his fellows who come to accept his counsel without question. Later, when Hazel is wounded by a gunshot in a raid on a human farm's rabbit hutch, Fiver has a vision that enables him to save his brother. He also gives Hazel a vision that inspires Hazel to set up the release of the Nuthanger Farm dog to save the Watership Down warren from General Woundwort. He often feels responsible for foreseeing terrible things, blaming himself for their outcome.

Explanation: It would make sense to give Italy magical powers to make up for his lack of physical strength, and Fiver's neurotic but kind, caring personality and sense of responsibility would suit him too. It would also act as a foil for the hands-on, physical Germany (Bigwig).

Bigwig – Germany

His name in Lapine is Thlayli, which means "Fur-head" and refers to the shock of fur on the back of his head. Formerly an officer in the Sandleford Owsla, the largest and best fighter of the Sandleford survivors. He is often blunt and impatient for dangerous action and fighting. He quickly befriends Kehaar. Hazel often selects him for the most dangerous missions, such as the infiltration of Efrafa and guarding the run against General Woundwort, a stand that nearly kills him. Later, he becomes captain of the Watership warren's "free-and-easy" Owsla.

Explanation:

Bigwig's hardy, fierce and serious personality fits Germany to a T. Plus Bigwig has a gentler side, as evident in Germany too. Plus, the Owsla = rabbit secret police--WW2 reference. I could definately imagine Germany in such an organisation but having his conscience direct him towards the right path and becoming BADASS LEADER F*CK YEAH. While also being a genuinely nice guy. Also, Ludwig = Bigwig...I'm sorry, I had to XP

Blackberry – Japan

A clever buck rabbit with black-tipped ears. He is often capable of understanding concepts that the other rabbits find incomprehensible. He realizes, for instance, that wood floats, and the rabbits use this tactic twice to traverse on water. He also works out how to dismantle the snare that almost kills Bigwig, saving him. He is one of Hazel's most trusted advisors, given the task to plan for a way to rescue does from Efrafra.

Explanation: Intelligence and the ability to read the atmosphere and understand, all the things that would make this work for me ^^ Also, if I were to do a fanfic on this, I would love Japan having Eureka moment and saving Germany from snare-trap.

Dandelion – France

A buck rabbit notable for his storytelling ability and speed. He is instrumental in luring the Nuthanger Farm dog into the Efrafans during the siege of Watership Down.

Explanation: Because we can all see France telling rambling stories of his sexual exploits/daring battles/anything else he believes is worthy of a speech. Also, his ability to make a quick getaway would fit with France's reputation as a stalker. Spain could also technically work for this one though ^^.

Pipkin – Canada

A small and timid buck rabbit, who looks to Hazel for guidance and protection. Hazel encourages him, and Pipkin grows very loyal to Hazel. He proves to be a constant comforter.

Explanation: To be honest, I don't think I really need to explain this one very much. He would be a great foil for the bold, fiery Romano (Hazel) though.

Hyzenthlay – Hungary

A female rabbit who lives in Efrafa and assists Bigwig in arranging for the liberation of its inhabitants. General Woundwort, who suspects her of fomenting dissension, orders his guards to keep a close eye on her. She escapes Efrafa with Bigwig and becomes Hazel's mate.

Explanation: Badass Hungary defying the Big Bad to save everyone and aid epic escape--nuff said.

Blackavar – Prussia

A rabbit with very dark fur who tries to escape from Efrafa but is apprehended, mutilated, and put on display to discourage further escape attempts. When he is liberated by Bigwig, he quickly proves himself as an expert tracker and ranger.

Explanation: I had trouble with this one, since Blackavar as, you guessed it, black fur. Perhaps, if either me or someone else could do a fic based on this character list, you could make it so that Prussia's coat somehow turns white. Perhaps he, like his canon counterpart, simply doesn't die and thus his age is reflected in his white coat. His name thus becomes a point of irony.

Kehaar – America

A Black-headed Gull who is forced, by an injured wing, to take refuge on Watership Down. He is characterised by his frequent impatience, guttural accent and unusual phrasing. After discovering the Efrafa warren and helping the rabbits, he rejoins his colony.

Explanation: Just because. I can see America as one crazy-talking seagull XD

General Woundwort – General Winter

The main antagonist: a vicious, cruel and brutally efficient rabbit who was orphaned at a young age, Woundwort founded the Efrafa warren and is its tyrannical chief. Though he is greater even than Bigwig in terms of his size and strength, he lacks the former's loyalty and kindness. He even leads an attack to capture the Watership warren as an act of revenge against Bigwig. After his apparent death, he lives on in rabbit legend as a bogeyman

Explanation: I don't need to explain this one either, I don't think...

Frith – Spain

A god-figure who created the world and promised that rabbits would always be allowed to thrive. In Lapine, his name literally means "the sun".

Explanation: Well...I was just thinking about Spain's sunny weather and general benevolent attitude...I thought this might fit.

El-ahrairah – England

A rabbit trickster folk hero, who is the protagonist of nearly all of the rabbits' stories. He represents what every rabbit wants to be: smart, devious, tricky, and devoted to the well-being of his warren.

Explanation: England having been depicted as a youngster with rabbits ears, plus his general devious attitude and tendency to curse people. But he is generally a nice guy too.

Black Rabbit of Inlé – Russia

A sinister phantom servant of the god Frith who appears in rabbit folklore. He is the rabbit equivalent of a grim reaper in human folklore, and similarly ensures all rabbits die at their predestined time. "Inlé" is the Lapine term for the moon or darkness.

Explanation: I don't think any is required for this, to be honest...
I was bored, clearly XD

I like the idea, but, then who'd be Commander Holly? I see Rome as the chief of the Sandleford Warren. Or what about Bluebell, Pimpernel, Toadflax, Cowslip, etc...I know I'm late, but, I'm curious.
